Scientists believe that [G 01 / baleen whales] may be able to smell the [G 19 / krill] they feed on and that they use smell to locate it. Unlike toothed whales which have no organ for smell (olfactory organ), baleen whales have retained this sense. They do have an olfactory organ and olfactory nerves in their bodies and an olfactory lobe in their brain.
Whales may also be able to taste their food. It is obviously very difficult for scientists to experiment on the ability of animals to taste things, particularly if the animal is as large as a blue whale. However, they believe that whales' tongues do have some taste organs on them and have some ability to taste their food.
